My latest experiment: Lasagna Garden!

I am starting a new project...Lasagna Gardening! Jody built me a box to help keep it all contained (hopefully our close neighbors seen in pic below will not be too annoyed...) I first started with several layers of wet newspaper then added a layer of compost from our compost bin we started back behind our greenhouse. The next layer is grassclippings from last weekends mowing, then another layer of compost. It was Jody's idea to begin a compost bin without any real plans for it but I am thankful for that random idea 3 years ago. Hopefully we will reap the benefits this spring/summer with a healthy harvest!

It started downpouring on us so we stopped after only 3 layers but the basic idea of a lasagna garden is to just layer away with organic materials until you have the depth you want. It will sit all fall and winter and be ready for planting in early spring. Can't wait to see how this experiment goes...will keep you posted.

  2. Jessi! That is what we did for our garden this summer...it worked out great...the tomato plants were so massive it was crazy! Now...if the boys hadn't turned off my automatic sprinkler in the middle of August heat, everything else would be doing well, too. Oh, and i forgot about the attack of the creepy squash bugs...but i am learning and it is fun for the kids to harvest what we grew! It looks great..god job, Jody!
