Our Journey to Haiti: Day One

The past few days haven’t gone exactly as we dreamed they would, but we are trying our best to just enjoy the journey and go with the flow.  After being in a holding pattern for many weeks, we got the green light to make the actual move to Haiti happen.  Since then, things have been fast and furious.  We didn’t get to hug everyone we wanted to, or see all the people we would have liked to see one last time before moving but overall we feel settled and peaceful.

Today started a bit hectically as we finished getting all the last minute stuff packed and loaded.  We planned on it being laid back this morning but then I got a call yesterday from my midwives office that I needed to try to come in early this morning for some additional lab work to make sure my blood sugars were remaining within normal limits.  This threw a small kink in our plans but we got everything done we needed to (we think!) and made it to our parking lot send off at Antioch.  This is a special tradition at Antioch, where we worship and are prayed over and encouraged prior to leaving for the field.  We have attended these before for friends.  It was crazy to be OUR send off this time.  I was overwhelmed and reminded once again of God’s faithfulness to us.

We finally got all the last minute errands done around Waco and headed out of town about 2pm…destination: Baton Rouge, LA!  Antioch has a new church plant there (www.antiochbr.com).  We were in training with the Baton Rouge team and spent a month with them in South Africa this time last year.  The team leaders, Jake & Abigail Griffin, let us crash at their house and were super hospitable.  We love being part of God’s Kingdom and His People.  Such an honor to know such amazing people all over the world.

You may be wondering, “Why are they driving to Baton Rouge??  I thought you were moving to Haiti?!”  Well, we are actually driving all the way to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  We are shipping our car to Haiti and then catching a flight on Saturday.  So we are on our way… but still have several logistical things to work through before our flight leaves on Saturday morning.  Please be praying for us!  That we would be patient and kind with one another and that we would have FUN in the process and not stress over little things as we get physically tired.  Pray for us to be refreshed by the Holy Spirit moment by moment.

Playing and getting our wiggles out before heading back on the road.

Our boys did an AWESOME job traveling today!  We stopped this one time for gas, bathrooms and dinner and then had one more gas stop late in the evening, but the boys were resting and didn’t want to get out for the bathroom.  Crazy!  They were pleasant and not TOO obnoxiously loud in the car.  I don’t have the expectation that tomorrow will go as smoothly but I am thankful that they were amazing today!  I love our little world travelers!

Thanks to all of you who have been praying for us today!  We experienced the fruit of your prayers with safe and fun travel.  We love you all!

  1. I don't know if Jody knew it or not, but when he pulled out of the driveway with the boys, Granny Pat had been standing at the door for I don't know how long hoping to see them when they pulled out. She was so happy when Jody stopped to check the trailer and waved back at her. She said she came out on her front porch & stood watching until the car was out of sight. She got tears in her eyes telling me how she was going to miss sitting on the front porch swing with Josiah. She loves you guys! :) mom
